Day 0: Ash Wednesday

3, 2, 1 … Lent!

Welcome to Carbon Fast 2014! We hope that it will be an inspiring, and lifestyle- and world-changing experience.

Let’s start with a prayer as we embark on the road less travelled together:

Gracious Lord, as we fast from carbon, we mourn the destruction of so much of your creation. May we take up the challenge to walk the path less travelled, to restore more of your creation than we destroy. Help us to act with love and care for all that you have created.

To start this 40-day fast, why not calculate your current carbon footprint?

Click here for an Australia-based calculator for countries with a more moderate climate.

Please share your footprint  and your thoughts on it on our Facebook page!

Rev. Rachel Mash from Cape Town, South Africa: 1,77 planets

I found the carbon footprint calculator quite sobering. I scored 1,77 planets, a scary thought! I am using way above my share of resources on this planet. I do try to live more simply, but I think it is the air travel that boosts my carbon footprint. This is a real challenge to us: how to meet and connect using other ways apart from air travel. And what of the ‘love miles’ when you visit family?

Salome Leseyane: 4,83 planets

We would need 4,83 planets if everyone lived my lifestyle! There is certainly a lot of waste in the world, and food waste is the worst. It would be great if everyone could do this exercise!

We would require 2.5 planets if we all lived as I do. Much work to do ahead. How do others fare using the calculator?

Lent 2014 kicks off tomorrow, Wednesday, 5 March. We’re excited that you’ve decided to identify with Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness by carbon fasting this year.

We welcome you to participate not only by downloading the 40-day guide and sharing it with your friends, family and church, but also by keeping the conversation going with us here on the Carbon Fast 2014 blog and our Facebook page.

HOW MANY PLANETS WOULD IT TAKE TO SUSTAIN YOUR LIFESTYLE?

To get ready for the carbon fast, start by calculating your current carbon footprint using this easy-to-use app developed by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Please share your results here or on Facebook along with your thoughts.

Lori-Rae-van-LarenLori-Rae van Laren, a South African student, had this to say about her footprint:

My carbon footprint: 2.83 planets
I’ve always felt like I was doing enough for our environment so it was interesting to see that I’m ‘part of the problem’. Working through the carbon footprint calculator I realised that in many circumstances I feel like change is out of my control. As a student you can’t dictate how the house you rent is set up (or not set up) to combat environmental and climate change. And organic food does not fit the student budget! The biggest lesson that I have learnt being involved in this campaign is that I do have a voice and I can make a difference in my home, university and neighbourhood. I am also making a personal commitment this year to utilising public transport more often. Living in South Africa, It’s not as easy and convenient as driving but change is more important than convenience!

What is a carbon fast for Lent?

“Love the earth just as much as God does…”

– Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu

What is a carbon fast for Lent? For Anglicans, Lent is the time when we remember the 40 days that Jesus spent in the wilderness, facing challenge and temptation. It is a time when we reflect on God’s purpose for our life. Many Anglicans take this opportunity to fast from coffee, alcohol or chocolates. But this year our challenge is deeper, to take a carbon fast – to reduce the use of carbon based fuels on which we all depend. We will take small steps for a more sustainable world, and by doing so rediscover a different relationship with God, with Creation and with one another.

Because I can change the world a little in 40 days, but I can change myself a lot!

How do I take a carbon fast? From Ash Wednesday, 5 March, to 12 April is a time of reflection and action. Each week has a theme with a prayer, a resource to read or watch, actions to take as an individual, some suggestions of community actions you can take and something you can consider doing to change the system.

Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction and many enter through it.
